Minister of Transport, Ramkrishna ‘Sudin' Dhavalikar, informed that the head office of the transport department and all the RTOs (regional transport offices), put together, contributed Rs 211.4 crore to the state exchequer from April 1 to November 30, 2017.
Dhavalikar provided this information while replying to a question tabled by St. Cruz MLA Antonio Fernandes in the assembly. The head office of the transport department contributed close to Rs 80 crore to the state exchequer in this time period. Among RTOs, Mapusa RTO contributed the highest to the state government at Rs 23.5 crore.
Margao RTO at Rs 23.1 crore was the second highest contributor to the state exchequer. Panaji RTO stood third at Rs 19.5 crore contribution to the revenue.
Dhavalikar's information revealed that state's transport revenue is on an upswing. In the 9 months from April to November in 2017, RTOs and head office of transport contributed Rs 211.4 crore. Compared to this, all these offices contributed Rs 236 crore in the whole of 2016-17.
While replying to another question, Dhavalikar further informed that there are 12.68 lakh vehicles registered in the state of Goa.
4.69 lakh traffic challans issued so far
PANAJI: CM Manohar Parrikar on Thursday informed that 4.69 lakh challans have been issued till November 30, this year for various traffic violations in the State. "In 2016, 3,63,467 challans were issued for various traffic violations. This is one method by which irrational driving can be controlled. This year, till November 30, 4.69 lakh challans have been issued which is 1.06 lakh more compared to last year. This indicates that enforcement from police side has improved," said Parrikar.
He was responding to the Zero Hour mention by Poriem MLA Pratapsing Rane who raised the issue of rising number of a accidents due to reckless driving.
Parrikar however informed that through the Traffic Sentinel Scheme, the Police have started receiving inputs on traffic violations. "Till now 410 violations have been reported by people. This scheme has to be popularised through various methods," he said, adding that the Transport Department has also initiated a special check drive against non-transport vehicles operating illegally as taxis, yellow-black taxis and tourist taxis.
"Within the last seven days, more than 170 private vehicles which were used as taxis have been penalised and this drive will go on till January, after which we will make arrangements to take permanent action," he said.
"Additionally we have identified 37 black spots which will be improved," he stated.
